1965 Ford GT40 Mk 1b - Baby Blue Bombshell

May 21st, 2009 by iwanttoblog

While Armstrong’s car was being built, he kept up on its assembly via photos e-mailed from the factory. Roaring Forties builds three basic GT40 body types: a Mark 1, a Mark 1B (a bit wider at the rear wheels due to the flared fenders used on the original Gulf cars), and a Mark II (larger air-intake scoops). Wanting to own a Gulf-type GT, Armstrong ordered a Mark 1B turnkey-minus package from Roaring Forties.

And though original GTs were painted in many different color combinations in the ’60s, clearly the most famous were known as the Gulf cars–sponsored by Gulf Oil and painted in a powder-blue with a distinctive marigold-orange graphic racing-stripe design. The Gulf-colored GTs are popular in GT lore as they are most famous for crossing the finish line in first place at LeMans in both 1968 and 1969. more

Racing law queried

May 20th, 2009 by iwanttoblog

About two-thirds of those charged under the law plead guilty to lesser offences or walk away entirely.

While only a third are convicted of street or stunt racing, all drivers charged under the act are on the hook for hefty fees for the roadside towing and impounding of their vehicles.

Runciman said the province’s community safety minister, who is responsible for policing, needs to ensure the law is working properly.

“If people are being wrongly accused, that’s a serious issue,” he said. “I heard (OPP Commissioner Julian) Fantino saying, ‘Well, at least their insurance rates will go up.’ Should their insurance rates go up if they were inappropriately charged?” . more

The Times: Techno-folk Toronto

March 1st, 2009 by iwanttoblog

His $500 (including airfare) budget made him act more like a local than a tourist, jogging past the tourist traps rather than wandering in, chilling in Kensington, record shopping at Soundscapes, streetcar watching, checking out a show at the Tranzac.

He even hits the local cultural notes, throwing in shout-outs to Jane Jacobs and Margaret Atwood and, in the video, gets all Shawn Micallef on everyone: remarking on the “surprising moments of beauty” in the urban environment over a shot of a woman with a potted plant passing a graffiti mural.

One appreciates his appreciation of our hot dog vendors:

As a New Yorker, I am loath to admit this, but I think Toronto has a better handle on street dogs: grilled, not steamed, with a panoply of toppings unavailable in the five boroughs — corn relish, pepperoncini, bacon bits, green olives, pickle slices, sriracha sauce. more

TSX little changed as oil rises; NY closed for Memorial Day

February 27th, 2009 by iwanttoblog

The TSX energy sector was flat as the July crude contract moved up 67 cents to US$132.86 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The oil price topped US$135 a barrel last week, but some observers suggest this represented a peak. International financial George Soros said in an interview published Monday that parabolic oil prices have increasingly been powered by speculation which has created a bubble.

But OPEC President Chakib Khelil predicted oil prices will keep rising because the falling U.S. dollar is prompting investors to buy commodities. . more

Every Reason To Panic Over Portland Condo Glut

February 26th, 2009 by iwanttoblog

Portland’s condo demand appeared insatiable. Now, shelved projects and stalled construction dot the city as a Shadow falls on the Portland condo market.

In the hot real estate summer of 2005, the futuristic John Ross tower generated a buzz never seen before in Portland. Within a week, 222 potential buyers plunked down $5,000 or more to reserve their condos in the 31-story tower on the Willamette River. The talk around town was that developers couldn’t build new big-city condos fast enough to keep up with downsizing baby boomers and newcomers.

But two years later, the condo boom is over. Today, the John Ross has seen so many canceled purchases that developers actually have fewer buyers — 192 — than they did two years ago.

The city has a condo glut, and thousands more are rising out of the ground. more

ADA: VA Diabetes Trial Appears to Vindicate Rosiglitazone (Avandia

February 25th, 2009 by iwanttoblog

Explain to interested patients that preliminary data from a large six-year study indicated that rosiglitazone (Avandia) was not associated with an increased rate of cardiovascular events.

Point out that the results are not consistent with an earlier analysis of data from other large trials indicating that the drug causes increased numbers of cardiovascular events.

Note that this study was published as an abstract and presented orally at a conference. These data and conclusions should be considered to be preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. . more
